Our The Star in-house columnists' views on the budget
* It is a terrible disappointment that the retirement age for the private sector remains at 55 while for civil servants it has been raised to 60 from 58. This widens the disparity between civil servants and the private sector to a very large five years and seriously undermines the lifelong earning capacity of private sector employees. The private sector retirement age should have been raised to at least 58. The Government has capitulated to the pressure of private sector employers, disappointing millions of workers and hampering its own efforts towards becoming a high income nation.
